The backyard phase of this project was designed to be an outdoor lounging and entertainment area. A cedar deck was designed and constructed for dining and a patio area, using high quality pavers from Unilock, for lounging after a meal. The linear focus of the front garden design was continued in the design for the backyard, leading from the patio doors, down the deck stairs to the patio walkway lined with Ornamental pear trees on either side creating an ‘allée’, which will eventually form a flowering canopy over the walkway.
At the end of the walkway stands a pizza oven, installed on a custom built base and counter top. Completing the lounge area feel is a Unilock fireplace with adjoining wood boxes. Black cedars were used as a backdrop to bring some privacy to an otherwise open design concept.
The garden behind the patio area was designed to act as a native plant shade garden, helped with the installation of three 6 metre (18 feet) tall ‘Green Mountain’ Sugar Maple trees, providing instant shade to the garden. A ‘secret garden trail’ meanders through the area leading to the grassed play area for the children. The planting design around the patio has more of an ornamental focus, highlighted by a beautiful Japanese Maple, ornamental grasses, hostas and groundcovers, while the planting beds away from the patio incorporate drought tolerant plants to reduce maintenance.
