Streambank Erosion Control
Newmarket, ON

Before

With heavy rain comes a continual concern of increased soil erosion along the banks of a creek in Newmarket, ON. Adding to the concern is the proximity of the eroded bank to a private residence alongside the creek. With funding help from the Town of Newmarket and the Government of Canada, Genus Loci was commissioned to use their experience in shoreline restoration to control the erosion using a bioengineering technique with a combination of granite boulders, live staking, seeding and native shrub plantings and the Envirolock system. This combination will enable Genus Loci to stabilize and reshape the bank to improve water flow, while keeping the banks of the creek natural. The Envirolok system does not interfere with hydrological processes, it retains oxygen and moisture, absorb sound, shifts with freeze and thaw cycles and the rooted native vegetation locks and improves the structure year after year. First you build the wall, after the wall is constructed the face of the bags are planted with native seed and plants. The roots will grow through the bags developing extensive root systems. Some root structures of mature natives grow roots up to 20 feet into the earth, even growing into the soil below and adjacent to the wall, locking the wall into place.
